You may have a stellar product and an intelligent staff, but if you do not have the proper management staff in place, your chances of success are greatly reduced.  Management is key to operating and growing a business; the right people on your management team can make all the difference.

Much of corporate culture is top down – management’s attitudes, work ethics, and integrity trickle down throughout the organization.  A strategically built management team can increase enthusiasm and motivate employees to achieve corporate goals of increasing profit, growing the client base, and enjoying work.

When a company is just sprouting roots or at a position in the marketplace where it can really make a splash, it is wise to have a third party review your management team.  The Indiana Venture Center is experienced in evaluating current management teams and helping companies find the right person for an open management position.  Through critical analysis, the Indiana Venture Center will be able to work with you to ensure your management team has what it takes to grow a successful business.

Once the Indiana Venture Center gains an understanding of your business and objectives by reviewing your business plan, we will begin to review your management team.  We will look at each management team member individually and determine if they are adequate for the position they hold.

  1. Does each individual have the necessary skill set to perform the duties of their position?
Creating a strong management team takes more than just filling the position with someone who has experience or the appropriate college degree.  Past experience can give great insight into the individual, but it should not be the only measurement tool used in the evaluation.  Management must possess the necessary skills to perform the job duties properly, learn within the position, and lead the company into the future.  Possessing the ability to adapt to the environment is crucial.
  2. Does each individual possess leadership qualities?
Starting and growing a company takes unique individuals that can quickly adapt and adjust to new situations.  Each individual in the management team must radiate a degree of confidence and security; employees look to management for comfort and ease.  When management is on top of their game, employees are more productive and self-assured.
  3. Does management have a passion for the business?
Management must believe in the business and the goals they are working to achieve.  Enthusiasm is contagious, and within an emerging business, management must demonstrate motivation and dedication - employees, partners, and clients will be incorporating and reflecting management’s attitudes into their performance and the level of service they provide.
  4. Do you consult with the proper outside advisors?
Smaller, start-up companies do not have the resources to hire all the human talent that they require.  Many times, companies are able to turn to outside advisors, whether they are contract help or the board of directors.  By turning to outside advisors, companies are able to gain valuable expertise inexpensively.  Gathering knowledge from individuals from your industry or a desired profession can make your organization stronger and less likely to commit mistakes that have been done in the past.
